Colon cancer is one of the deadliest diseases in the world. It has been revealed that every year more than 600,000 people die of colon cancer. It is the second most common form of cancer. Colon cancer begins as small, non cancerous lumps of cells that are called adenomatous polyps. After some time these polyps become colon cancers but this is not the case for all polyps. The symptoms of colon cancer in the earlier stages are few and sometimes on existent but with time, the symptoms may become evident. Let us look at some colon cancer symptoms:

o Constipation and diarrhea for a prolonged period of time.
o There will be a lot of changes in the bowel system.
o Blood in the stool. The tumors in the colon may bleed.
o Thin stool because of squeezing by the tumors.
o Weight loss without any reason. The person will suddenly experience weight loss without having done anything.
o Gas and bloating. The gas will be trapped with the stool in the colon.
o A feeling that the bowel is not emptied even after passing stool. The body will sense the tumors and seek its removal.
o Nausea and vomiting. The food will not be digested well and the person will feel nauseated at the sight and smell of any food.
o Stomach cramps and abdominal pain.
o Bleeding hemorrhoids almost occurs every time the colon is in trouble.

There are many causes of colon cancer. Some of them are: Age, genetics, alcohol, diabetes, diet, obesity, lack of exercise, smoking, etc.

It is very important to keep a vigil on the signs and symptoms that the body produces every now and then. If detected early then every disease has the chance of being cured. Colon cancer signs must not be ignored and it is a must to consult a doctor immediately in such situations. There are many treatments for colon cancer but the results differ. Some treatments are surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy and targeted drug therapy.

A person above the age of 50 must regularly go for colon cancer screening. It may happen to anyone of any age before we also need to do regular checks and take precautionary steps to prevent colon cancer. We can maintain a good diet which includes fresh vegetables and fruits, nuts and good oils, take regular exercises, keep the weight in control, avoid smoking, limit the alcohol consumption, etc.
